A Young Family Makes their Mark on a Recently Reno’d Toronto Home — House Tour

Name: Erin and Mike and their two kids (ages 6 and 3)
Location: Riverdale — Toronto, Ontario
Size: 2,000 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 years, owned

This three-story, century home in Toronto is filled to the brim with stylish thrift hauls, DIY projects, and chic details. The combination of all those fixings make this house a pleasure to visit. It’s clear that Erin and Mike have put their hearts into making this the perfect luxurious family home for their small family.

Mike and Erin bought their home fully renovated two and a half years ago but the finishings weren’t quite their style. Thankfully, Erin is a strong believer in up-cycling, and through mid-century furnishings and clean natural lines, made a generic house into a stylish home with a ton of natural character. Erin has diagnosed herself with a “Thrift and Curbside Obsession” and can’t help herself when she sees a unique piece of furniture in a local thrift store. Together, her family has created a space that is both family-friendly and totally functional.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Eclectic! Love the warmth and sleekness of mid-century teak and rosewood furniture pieces, the history and nostalgia of vintage items, the textures and colour of bohemian decor, as well as the weight and roughness of combining industrial and rustic elements.

Inspiration: Pinterest offers an endless list of DIY projects. Instagram profiles: Apartment Therapy, Domino Mag., Emily Henderson, Home Polish, Home Sense, One Kings Lane, Rue Magazine, The Citizenry…this list is just a few of many. Our home and neighboring houses are over a century old so walking through our community is immensely inspiring. Our kids inspire us; their minds are very creative…and funny!

Favorite Element: High ceilings and open concept main floor. The “Master-Retreat” on the third level — complete with a deck that has a view towards the city landscape. Our neighborhood — there is a strong sense of community.

Biggest Challenge: Having no garage for storage or DIY projects has proven pretty challenging.

What Friends Say: “It just keeps going…another set of stairs!?!”

Biggest Embarrassment: Bathrooms — we haven’t done any work to any of the bathrooms. All the bathrooms were renovated prior to our purchasing the home, and although the finishes aren’t what we would have chosen, it seems crazy to re-do what has recently been reno’d…for now at least.

Proudest DIY: (Happy to say it’s a long list) Entryway bench (solid ash slab with steal legs), under sofa Lego trundle, painted/upcycled Art Deco buffet (found in the trash, now resides in our spare-room), barn board wall installation in our basement. Thrift Store vintage teak Desk restore — now my sewing/craft table. Pallet Wall Art – World Map.

Biggest Indulgence: Our EQ3 Reverie Leather Sofa in our living room. We’ve had it for almost two years, and we still love it and it’s held up really well.

Best Advice: Make your house a home and fill it with items that make it your happy place.

Dream Sources: Erin’s Dream Sources – To rent an RV with some of my girlfriends and spend a long weekend in the summer touring yard sales/thrift stores in Ontario, searching for new treasures. That is seriously our dream road trip!

Mike’s Dream Sources – Best Buy! He would like to equip the back-deck with a flat-screen tv and have an outdoor space to enjoy the hot Toronto summer, while watching all the sports he enjoys!
