Target is Testing Next Day Delivery

Big news, Target fans: the Minnesota based retailer is testing next-day delivery for household essentials.

According to a press release from earlier this week, the pilot program, called Target Restock, will launch this summer and is available to Minneapolis area Target REDcard holders. They can access Restock through a dedicated site and fill a box—that will be packed and shipped from the local store—with thousands of essentials like toilet paper, laundry detergent, and coffee. Orders received before 1:30 pm will arrive next day. While it’s quite Amazon Prime just yet, that appears to be where Target is heading.

“We created Target Restock to save busy guests time, and make it easier than ever to get household essentials delivered quickly,” according to the statement.

We’re not sure what to think quite yet. While getting the stuff you need fast is wonderful, half the fun is browsing Target, albeit that’s not always great for your wallet.

This isn’t the only new change happening at Target. Trade publication Chain Store Age just reported that the company also debuted 360-degree shopping on their website, creating a virtual reality experience that’s totally shoppable. There are four different curated living rooms, ranging in style from farmhouse to mid-century, and the 140 products can be added to cart straight from the room.

“We’re constantly searching for new ways to inspire our guests and make shopping at Target an easy and inspiring experience,” said Mike McNamara, chief digital officer, Target. “And we’re just beginning to tap the power of CGI with this virtual reality living room—there’s a ton of potential to create even richer, engaging digital experiences for our guests.”

This year is also seeing some changes in-store, as Target is redesigning locations to be easier to shop, with dual entrances for browsing and for quick pick up and check out. The first fully reimagined store will be located 35 miles southwest of Houston off the Grand Parkway Southwest in Aliana’s Market Center. This store, opening in October, will provide the blueprint for stores going forward and the redesigns to existing locations (Target says one third of stores will have the new design by 2019).
