How to Pull Off the Modern Boho Look, According to Mindy Kaling’s Gorgeous New York Apartment — Professional Project

When you’re a powerhouse actress/producer/screenwriter/author/all around wonder woman like Mindy Kaling, you don’t really have all the time in the world to hem and haw about which color white you’re picking for the walls of your home or which sofa will fit best into your living room. So, she turned to the pros when outfitting her new Manhattan apartment, working with designer Sally Gotfredson of The Studio at One Kings Lane to create this lust-worthy “modern boho” home.

“This apartment is a reflection of my street style—great accents on top of a neutral palette,” Kaling tells One Kings Lane. We’re crushing hard on the overall design scheme that looks crisp, super pulled together but full of fun moments and personality.

You’ll also find great vintage pieces, mostly mid-century modern, which is a nod to Kaling’s dad. “My dad loves mid-century modern, and the house that we grew up in was furnished with a lot of pieces in the Danish mid-century style,” she says. “As I grew older I reacted to that. Whereas at one point in my life I loved wallpaper and gilded things, now, as a 37-year-old, I’m gravitating more toward my dad’s style, and I think Sally really captured that in the vintage pieces she found.”

The living room is what the designer calls “Moroccan mid-century.” “Mindy wanted it to feel different than any of the other spaces she’s lived in before,” says Gotfredson. “She’s always gone for tons of color with layers of pattern, and this time she really wanted to push herself out of that comfort zone.”

The mid-century nod continues in the dining room and kitchens, where a tulip table and two Scandinavian-style chairs mingle with a super modern chandelier. Color is introduced via the art. “Yellow and pink are colors Mindy really wanted to use,” says Gotfredson, “but we couldn’t really find the right moment for it. So during the 11th hour, we found this piece and installed it without ever showing it to her.”

In her bedroom, it’s all about the textiles. Simple, classic roman shades and an upholstered headboard are totally amped up by the tasseled blanket, and kilim-covered ottomans and throw pillow.
