A Small, Refined, “Traditional Eclectic” Houston Rental — House Tour

Name: Todd
Location: Montrose — Houston, Texas
Size: 600 square feet
Years lived in: 3 1/2 years, renting

As someone who works at an architecture firm, it makes complete sense that Todd would choose to live in the lively and hip Montrose area in Houston, Texas. Living in a neighborhood that has access to art, culture, amazing food and nightlife was more important to Todd than space. When he settled down in his 600-square-foot, one-bedroom rental, he worried less about the lack of space and more about applying his expertise in making the space work for him. Spoiler alert: mission accomplished!

Though Todd admits he has a lot of stuff, his home doesn’t feel overwhelmingly cluttered. That’s due to a mix of hidden storage and very neatly arranged open storage. But, this is a man who loves to be surrounded by things that remind him of where he’s been and what he’s done. His walls are full of art, but because he never passes up buying something he likes, you might find a few pieces still “propped on the floor.”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Traditional Eclectic. Working for an architecture firm, I appreciate modern design but I feel at home around objects with a history. My apartment is a mix of pieces I’ve bought and many things passed down from family or loaned by my parents.

Inspiration: Inspiration is everywhere: Travel, films, research for work, friends, my Texan background. My apartment is a constant reminder of the places and things I’ve experienced around the world.

Favorite Element: Location. I’m in a prime spot in the city, and can walk to museums, restaurants, and best of all the commute to my office is less than 10 minutes. Also the stone floors in the whole apartment. I really disliked them at first, but they’ve grown on me.

Biggest Challenge: Storage. Every cabinet and drawer is full; I’ll never be accused of being a minimalist. Also trying to find places to stack my latest trove of books; you can never have too many!

What Friends Say: Please help me with my place”

Biggest Embarrassment: I don’t want to say I’m embarrassed by anything because I’m fortunate to be able to live here, but if I have to pick something then definitely my storage. Opening a closet door is at your own risk because they are PACKED.

Proudest DIY: Painting the whole apartment. When I moved in the walls were a terrible flesh-toned color. It was…weird. I lived with it for a month or so before I decided to paint everything and it allowed me to really make the place my own.

Biggest Indulgence: 1. My sofa. It was way more expensive than I could afford at the time, but I’m so glad I went ahead and bought it because it’s comfortable, classic, and I can use it forever.

2. Artwork. I’ve officially run out of wall space but if I find something I like I’ll still buy it. (Hence all the pieces propped on the floor.)

Best Advice: Don’t try to do everything all at once. The most interesting and comfortable spaces have to develop over time.

Only buy things that you enjoy. I bought a pricey designer chair because I work in the architecture field and felt like I was just supposed to have one, but the scale was all wrong and worst of all it was uncomfortable. Expensive lesson learned.
