A Designer’s Colorfully Chic Chicago Apartment — House Tour

Name: Victoria Pater
Location: Bucktown, Chicago
Years lived in: 2 years

Victoria, her husband Joe, and their cute pup live in a colorful apartment bubbling with mid-century modern energy. After a look around their home, it comes as no surprise that Victoria is the owner of a charming pin business, Mid Mod Pin. In her day job, she designs brands, experiences and digital products. And in this home, her Mid Mod Pin headquarters is housed in a delightful mint green home office.

The attention to detail in her pin designs has certainly led to their popularity. And it’s this commitment to creativity that spills over into the design of her home. She’s seamlessly combined original art, (vintage and new) modern furniture, and pops of pattern (check out that amazing Orla Kiely accent wall behind the couch). The home is both modern and retro, with a nice balance between color and control. And the couple’s love of travel is reflected in the artwork throughout, especially in the airport pillows on the living room couch.

Their current project is revamping the roof deck to be a comfortable lounge. “The roof deck is a large, continuous project — next year we’ll add a garden, build out some shaded areas, and keep working to make it feel less sparse and more cozy.” Considering how cool and colorful the rest of the home is, there’s no doubt the roof deck will look great.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Modern with a mid-century flair and pops of color

Inspiration: Orla Kiely, Ray & Charles Eames, Alexander Girard

Favorite Element: Nelson bubble lamps + navy wall + gold bed frame + vintage nightstands with tiny bow handles in the master bedroom.

Biggest Challenge: The amount of outdoor space we have is challenging, but it’s also why we bought the place. Investing in patio furniture when you live in Chicago is annoying, but summer is oh-so-worth it. The roof deck is a large, continuous project — next year we’ll add a garden, build out some shaded areas, and keep working to make it feel less sparse and more cozy.

What Friends Say: THIS wallpaper! You can’t miss the Orla Kiely accent wall behind our couch, especially since we put a mini bar in front of it as well 😉

Biggest Embarrassment: The amount of dog hair on the floor on any given day. Dark wood floors show everything!

Proudest DIY: The roof deck… although nothing too exciting to show for it yet.

Biggest Indulgence: My husband wants to say the kiddie pool we have up on the roof, but that was a $30 indulgence…I’d say all the artwork. Most are original or limited-edition pieces. It’s been fun to collect work from Chicago artists, our friends, or just people of the internet!

Best Advice: Pick a theme or color palette and roll with it! Keep in mind the style of the house/condo/building architecture, but don’t let it limit you. You can mesh styles from different time periods with the right finishes and colors.

Dream Sources: I wish I had more designer furniture. I’m dying to swap out my dining table and chairs for a Saarinen Tulip set. There is super rad patio furniture out there, but it costs a fortune and is probably not worth it… given we have a long winter here.
