The First Batch of 2018 Colors of the Year Are Here

Normally, we have to wait a little longer for Color of the Year announcements, which hues that brands and companies predict will be big in the coming year. Even though we’re only halfway through 2017, we already have gotten news of a few picks for 2018’s signature shade—and they’re all taking a dark turn.

Yes, we’re seeing quite a few dark hues emerging from the pack, which could mean that interior trends will continue to swing away from the light and bright trend of the past decade and back to cozy, comforting spaces with a touch of drama.

Benjamin Moore announced Shadow, a deep, almost black purple for their 2017 Color of the Year, calling it a “master of ambiance.”

And, it looks like 2018 is already following suit.

PPG Paints—Black Flame

PPG Paints has gone to the dark side with Black Flame, a “statement-making” black with an undertone of “the deepest indigo.” The combo of the two dark neutrals is “dressed up” and “timeless.”

Black Flame acts like a black curtain, allowing your other decor elements to take center stage,” said Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager. “Black creates the silence we crave in an information-heavy world, while the indigo offers possibility and a deep hopefulness.”

Schlotter also said that “the blend of two colors makes it incredibly versatile – use it on a statement wall, with a matte finish on a ceiling, with high gloss on a naturally-lit staircase, on cabinets, interior and exterior doors, and in many more places.”

Two of PPG’s other paint brands also announced darker hues for 2018:

Glidden—Deep Onyx

Glidden is going back to basics with Deep Onyx, an uncomplicated, minimalist black that goes with everything. If you’re considering your first foray to the dark side, this might be the hue for you. The “no-fuss” shade encourages a “less is more” approach to decorating. After all, they say, it’s just paint.

“Using a black paint color like Deep Onyx on your walls or in your decor may feel intimidating at first, but it’s actually one of the easiest colors to use to create the low-key, easygoing style that’s trending for 2018,” said Misty Yeomans, PPG color marketing manager for Glidden.

Olympic—Black Magic

Olympic’s pick, Black Magic, “embodies glamour and strength,” and is “a statement piece for your walls.”

“In past years, consumers have gravitated toward open, airy spaces that are thought to leave room for exposure,”says Schlotter. (Olympic’s COTY for 2017 was Cloudberry, a soft violet). But now, “they crave deep, comforting colors that offer a welcomed escape from the chaos of daily life. Black Magic perfectly satisfies consumers’ desire for privacy.”
