A New Palm Springs Community Sells Tiny Homes That Are Both Adorable and Affordable

Fans of mid-century architecture and design are drawn to Palm Springs, California like moths to the flame, but few can afford to actually live there. That all may be about to change, though, thanks to one enterprising “vintage mobile home park” in south Palm Springs that recently embraced the Tiny Home Movement.

With all the ancient palm trees, blue sky vistas, mountain backdrops and cement brick screens one could want from the Palm Springs desert — but none of the sticker shock — Palm Canyon Club is a completely remodeled mobile home community just a stone’s throw from Agua Caliente and Coachella with newly-built “modern micro-homes in a not-too-tiny package” starting at just $115,000 for a one bedroom (plus a $650/month space rental).

According to local paper The Desert Sun, Ravinia Communities in conjunction with Goetz Ventures plans to build 100 “micro homes” within the already established Palm Canyon Mobile Club on South Palm Canyon Drive where the motto is “go small, live large.” Featuring one and two bedroom tiny homes sized between 600 and 1000 square feet, 9 foot ceilings, clerestory windows, modern kitchens, separation of bedrooms, private fenced yards — even and STORAGE — plus easy hookup to grid amenities and utilities, this is not your grandma’s RV community.

Palm Canyon Club seems focused on bringing younger blood to the popular destination area, with both rental and for-sale homes that appear to be marketed as vacation properties or starter homes with additional, trendy community amenities at “The Club” like a remodeled resort-style pool and spa, updated clubhouse, outdoor barbecues and lounge areas, gym, and dog park.

But the developers are also clever about marketing it as an “all-ages community” and appealing to retirees and older buyers, as well, by eschewing your average tiny home features such as lofts and second-story bedrooms, and including full-size appliances instead of the more popular space-saving options often found in tiny homes. As we recently wrote, Boomers and Millennials have more in common than we think, and that definitely includes tiny homes.

Paul Kaplan, the real-estate agent representing the homes, told The Desert Sun that the types of prospective buyers who would be interested in the Palm Canyon Mobile Club homes, including first-time home buyers, retirees, and locals who are frequently out of town.

The largest of the three currently available listings — a two bedroom, two bathroom, 800 square foot unit priced at $143,000 — offers a great peek into this community and its potential.
