A Dark & Decadent UK Rental Home — House Tour
Name: Kerry Lockwood, her husband Justin, kids Alfie and Jersey, and Chester the dog.
Location: Northumberland, UK
Size: 2000 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, renting
While some renters might shy away from making any dramatic changes to their home, interior stylist and lifestyle blogger Kerry Lockwood jumped right in. The rental home she shares with her family is in the center of town, walking distance from schools, shops, cafes and a local park. And it’s brimming with dramatic wall paint colors, quirky art and delightful design details. In fact, it’s in the details that Kerry’s design style really flourishes.
“I’m obsessed with home decor, mainly dark, moody hues. No corner is left untouched. For me it’s all about the detail. I try to create spaces that feel cosy, cool and lived in while adding touches that normally get overlooked to create a home that you will never want to leave. My style is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and pushing boundaries to take your space to the next level,” Kerry writes on her website.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Modern and eclectic
Inspiration: I find inspiration in many different places. My dream home would be a New York loft apartment as I love industrial style houses. But we have been restricted in our home as we are renting, so I try to use a mix of industrial and natural materials where possible.
Favorite Element: My living room. We go in there to relax; I just love the inky, dark walls. It feels so cosy.
Biggest Challenge: Most rooms have been a challenge as we are renting. So I have had to think of ways to make it feel like home without changing or spending too much. The kitchen was probably the most challenging but I painted the tiles black, which made a huge difference.
What Friends Say: They can’t believe how much we have done in our rented property and the difference it has made.
Biggest Embarrassment: The hallway is the only area that I haven’t decorated since we moved in. It still has green carpet, which is not my taste.
Proudest DIY: Sanding and painting the dining room and bedroom floors.
Biggest Indulgence: My vintage leather gym mat, which I use as a headboard.
Best Advice: Even when you are renting, there is so much that you can do. Painting is a game changer in any room and will really transform a space.
