The 8-Minute Clean Home Hack
Love a clean home but hate actually doing the cleaning part? Same. Sometimes a good “I’m stressed and I need something to distract me” clean can be totally satisfying, but on a daily basis, chores can be hard to keep up with.
“The Cleaning Ninja” by Courtenay Hartford, aims to help people who want to keep their home cleaner and get it done faster. It’s all about working smarter rather than harder, and taking on quick tasks that will make your chores—and your life—easier in the long run.
The book features entire chapters dedicated to the bathroom and kitchen, room-by-room cleaning checklists that you can use to easily do a full deep clean of your home, and a chapter full of ways to trick yourself into cleaning more (and quicker than you ever thought you could).
But probably the most helpful part of the book is the section that proves you can clean your home in less than 10 minutes. OK, so maybe it’s not the most deep, thorough clean, but it will make your home look and smell clean in a pinch (say, if you have last minute company coming over or you just need to feel like you’re in a clean environment but you don’t have the entire day to tidy). The book breaks your chores down into 8 different one-minute tasks, as follows:
Minute 1: Make the house smell pretty.
Minute 2: Clear the kitchen counters.
Minute 3: Clear the kitchen table.
Minute 4: Clear the junk from the living room.
Minute 5: Switch out the bathroom hand towel and use it to do a quick wipe-down.
Minute 6: Quick-scrub the toilet.
Minute 7: Dust all surfaces.
Minute 8: Wipe things down.
The book has detailed instructions for each minute so you can make the most of each task, and some come with even more resources later on in the book. For example, for Minute 1, the author suggests using scented wax melts and directs readers to page 105, which begins an entire chapter on dealing with weird odors and making your home smell great.
The book also features a detailed list of tips you can use every day to maintain the cleanliness of your home so the chores don’t pile up all the time. Tips include dusting your mirror with a feather duster daily (it helps add more time between full-on polishings) and keeping decorative baskets around for hidden storage, among other super simple but totally handy suggestions.
