Before & After: A Dated Dresser Gets a Stylishly Dark & Stenciled Makeover

As with so many romances these days, this one began online. Julie spotted this handsome dresser on Craigslist and knew she could truly make something of it. A mix of the original veneer, a new coat of paint and some gorgeous stenciling turned this tired looking piece into a true showstopper.

From Julie: I saw this piece on Craigslist and felt like he was winking at me! I knew I had to go and visit him. This poor old guy is nearly 100 years old and hadn’t had a drink or a new suit for many years. This was about to change. I loved the style and how much history was stored in his bones. Although he had been neglected for years, the drawers ran smoothly and the structure was sound. I knew I could give him a new life.

My plan was to try and preserve as much of the original veneer as I could, but to also give him a fresh new look. The process started with a good clean and a light sanding. The original varnish fell away easily. Where I was able to save the veneer I used hemp oil, it is like liquid gold. I planned to use black on the painted parts to look like a dinner suit and gold just seemed the perfect choice to highlight the patterns I chose.

I love the blending of old and new, the original veneer shines against the black. The choice of stencils would surprise some but I knew they would work!

Julie’s words of wisdom: Don’t be afraid to try new things, be fearless and give these wondrous pieces a new beginning.

Thank you so much Julie! You can see this project and more on Julie’s blog, Dandelions and Poppies.
