This Heart Shaped Island Comes with a Frank Lloyd Wright House
A piece of prime architectural history is up for sale, and a private island comes with it. Situated on the 11 acre, heart-shaped Petra Island in New York’s Putnam County, luxury real estate concierge Chilton & Chadwick have put the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed property on the market with a $14.92 million price tag.
Purchased by Joe Massaro in 1995, the home has undergone several major upgrades, including the expansion of the main residence into Wright’s original full vision, a design based off the architect’s blueprints that was reportedly intended to rival the architect’s “Fallingwater” home in Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Additionally, the triangular-shaped property features four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, boasts Wright’s signature cantilevering design and includes a 1950s retro kitchen style that gives off the feel of a time capsule home.
Another one of the modernist architect’s prominent touches can be seen in the creative meshing of the surrounding landscape and the home’s design. Throughout the house, exposed boulder stones decorate the concrete walls. A geometric skylight designed like a maze of triangles hovers over the center of the home, perfectly accentuating the rocky décor’s natural appearance.
As if the exterior isn’t stunning enough, the cottage also offers breathtaking views of Lake Mahopac. Plenty of huge windows and wraparound patios highlight the serene settings, which make it easy to forget that the home is only a short flight away from Manhattan.
As for the aforementioned commuting conveniences, the home comes equipped with a rooftop helipad. The property also includes a guest house, a tea house and a dock.
Of his commitment to stay true to Wright’s design aesthetic throughout the renovation process, Massaro tells Mansion Global that the island inspired his interest in architectural detail. In particular, he got the idea for a dazzling custom-colored light from a dream.
“I said, ‘Well Frank told me to do it,'” Massaro recalled, adding, “Detail was not is in my DNA until I stepped out on that island.”
