A Feel-Good Checklist to Set You Up for a Clean and In-Control Weekend — September Sweep

I could write an essay (I kind of already have) about how good it feels to have a clean refrigerator. Your stocks of foodstuffs are something you touch every day, and when the fridge, freezer and pantry are neat and organized, it carries on like a snowball effect through your whole space: If you have a tidy fridge, you must be a tidy person. Suddenly you’re empowered to muscle through a small mess on the dining table before you sit down for dinner.

So to close out week two of the September Sweep, we’re doing a quick pass of the places where we store food. Let’s jump in…

Today’s Assignment

Sort through the places where you store your food.

One place at a time, give each of these zones—the pantry, fridge and freezer—a once-over, looking for things that have outlived their usefulness.

Pantry

  • expired condiments
  • unneeded canned goods (save these for your donate box)
  • old, stale food
  • anything you have multiples of
  • anything you tried and didn’t like

Fridge

  • expired condiments
  • mystery leftovers
  • anything really old and unlikely to be used
  • anything you have multiples of
  • anything you tried and didn’t like

Freezer

  • anything freezer burned
  • anything really old and unlikely to be used
  • anything you have multiples of
  • ice trays or frozen tools that aren’t being used (looking at you, KitchenAid ice cream attachment)

Tip: For the things you have multiples of—or bulk foods—consider condensing them into glass jars or other containers.

Tip: Curious about the shelf life of your food? StillTasty is a website that can help.

Anything ready for the trash can go straight in the trash bin. Anything that can be donated should be set aside for a trip to a local food bank.

And don’t forget…

Week two is officially in the bag… as soon as you clear one more thing out of your monster zone. We’re halfway there!
