Pinks & Metallics Fill a Musician’s Unconventional Apartment — House Tour

Name: Peter Venuto
Location: The Plateau — Montreal, Quebec
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 4 years, renting

Peter Venuto’s apartment was originally an Airbnb rental — which Peter himself once rented — but after the landlord grew tired of that setup, Peter managed to work out a deal with him and rent it as a “normal” living space. Today, the apartment showcases bright pink colors, metallic walls, and lots and lots of synthesizers. Peter Venuto’s apartment is not your typical home, but that’s what he loves about it.

Peter’s apartment consists of two large distinct rooms that host hundreds of synthesizers and lots of recording equipment. The space, also known as Synth Palace, provides musicians with rental equipment that allows them to record on-site. Synth Palace is also home of the original Electric Rainbow Machine, an audio-activated persistence-of-vision electronic art installation and device. The machine has since gained attention from musicians all over the world, including the late David Bowie.

Before Peter moved into the space, he fell for the loft space and its proximity to Montreal’s Plateau neighborhood. He felt a connection with the space’s pre-existing decor, and aside from setting up a couple of large wooden tabletops to work on his projects, he essentially kept the furniture as it was.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Business Casual vs. LOL Party Center

Inspiration: Nikola Tesla, Lakshmi, and The Factory

Favorite Element: Silver bubble wrap water heater insulation motif

Biggest Challenge: Drunken denizens of Muzique nightclub mindlessly screaming outside my window.

What Friends Say: “Whoa, dude!”

Biggest Embarrassment: Not picking up that original pressing of Piper at the Gates of Dawn at Le Pick Up to become the centerpiece of the space.

Proudest DIY: Audio-activated persistence-of-vision light show called the Electric Rainbow Machine and shooting an entire set of hyper*karaoke video triptychs for Very Venuto with his phone.

Biggest Indulgence: Synths… and pomegranate, pineapple, mango, lemon juice and agave nectar smoothies

Best Advice: Work with your pre-existing environment… read Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras cover to cover and take the following ayurvedic herbs to support your biosystem: triphala, ashwaghanda, shilajit, arjuna, gotu kola, bacopa, and turmeric.
