Fast fashion goes mid-century modern: Uniqlo is paying homage to the most famous furniture designers of the era—the Eames.
The Japanese retailer known for affordable of-the-moment basics and artsy graphic tees is channeling Charles and Ray Eames for its latest line — with prices ranging from just $14.99 to $19.99.
The collaboration, called SPRZ NY Eames Collection, is part of Uniqlo’s larger SPRZ NY (for “Surprise New York”) brand — “a global project where art and fashion meet, creating something magical [through] items inspired by famed and influential artists of our time,” according to an announcement from Eames Office about the collaboration.
SPRZ NY Eames features graphic tees printed with iconic Eames chairs, plus atomic-vibe Eames dot- and multicolor Eames triangle-printed fleece throws, slippers, and shawls — perfect for getting cozy in your favorite actual Eames chair, your favorite midcentury modern inspo book and mug of cocoa in hand, this hygge season.
SPRZ NY Eames is going to be available in Japan and online starting on September 25th before going on sale in UNIQLO’s more than 1,000 stores worldwide. Architectural Digest has the U.S. launch pegged for October 12th and 13th, but reports the collection will only be available in NYC (three locations: 34th, SoHo, 5th Avenue) and Chicago (all stores).
AD also mentions that UNIQLO’s SPRZ NY collaborations are usually created in collaboration directly with New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and past SPRZ NY collaborations have included work by artists like Bauhaus fabric artist Anni Albert and Pop Art icons Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.
