Before & After: A Cozy and Minimal Master Bedroom

Amy saw how the previous owners had set up the master bedroom and decided to go in the exact opposite direction. She created a room that is both cozy and clean, despite having a fairly small footprint.

From Amy: The previous owners let their two young daughters share the master bedroom since it was the largest room in the house, hence the bright color palette! And while I love me a little feminine flare, this room was just overkill.

My fiancé and I knew we wanted to keep the room light and minimal in terms of color and furnishings because of the size. The room is truly not that large. In fact we had to sell our dresser because it wouldn’t fit! Having a smaller “master” bedroom in our home was truly a blessing in disguise because it helped us to get rid of our (okay MY) previous hoarding habits.

The process took several weeks. We did most of the work ourselves and almost all of the furniture was bought second hand or at deep discounts so we were able to keep our costs very low!

I honestly loved how everything turned out in this room, but my favorite thing is the minimal but meaningful things we decided to hang on our walls. The room itself feels so serene when you walk into it, and I find myself having a hard time getting out of bed every day because of how relaxing it is! I wouldn’t have done anything differently.

Amy’s words of wisdom: Know when to ask for help but take the time to learn things yourself too! As a homeowner, you should learn the basic skills of changing light fixtures, using power tools correctly, and filling holes in the walls. And lastly, ignore the “design rules” that limit your creativity and have fun!

Thank you, Amy! You can see this project and more on Amy’s blog fivefeetsmall.
