Before & After: A Forgotten Piece of Furniture Goes Boldly Blue

Melissa had one of those “it’s not you, it’s me” pieces of furniture — nothing was wrong with it but her style had just evolved beyond it. After coming across it again, she saw it with new eyes and set out to give it an easy and affordable update.

From Melissa: I had this hall table sitting under my house for a couple of years after I got over the whole “chocolate” furniture phase. After stumbling across the table one day I decided to revamp it into something that I would use once again. I hate wasted furniture sitting around without a purpose.

I sanded the table top back to bare wood and lightly sanded the base. Then I stained the top in a dark walnut finish and added a clear varnish to the top to protect it. I covered the top with newspaper before proceeding to undercoat and paint the top coat on the base. Once dried I added the knobs back to the drawers.

Revamping the table took me a weekend to complete. The total cost of the project was about $30 in total and this included stain, paint and new knobs for the drawers. During the staining phase of the table top, I didn’t read the instructions for the stain that well and it ended up being a little darker than I intended. That being said, I still love how it turned out. A good kind of accident.

The blue color is out of my comfort zone in color choices but I am glad that I pushed my boundaries and selected it. It really gives the piece some oomph.

Melissa’s words of wisdom: Always prep your piece of furniture well (i.e sanding and wiping down) before proceeding to paint as this creates a good foundation for the paint to stick to. Always read the instructions well on any new product you are using.
