Designer Caroline Z Hurley’s Textile-Filled Studio Apartment — House Tour
Name: Caroline Z Hurley
Location: West Village, NYC
Size: 420 square feet
Years lived in: 13 years
Caroline Z Hurley has lived in her apartment for 13 years, but has known the space even longer. Both of her sisters each lived in the apartment before her, and at one point, Caroline shared the 420-square-foot studio with one of them! Originally, the apartment was just an open studio with a half-wall separating the bedroom area. And while it eventually took ten months and one giant leak to renovate the space, the end result was worth it all.
With combined decades of experience living in the space (and one of Caroline’s sisters being an architect), the creative siblings knew better than anyone how to renovate the apartment. To create more living space, they lofted the bed with stylish, exposed beams, allowing for a full-size living room, spacious counter space, and ceiling-tall closets.
Being the founder of a successful home textiles business, it’s no surprise that Caroline’s West Village apartment is beautiful, inviting, unique, and just about the coziest space you’ve ever seen, filled with vintage textiles from around the world. In Caroline’s own words, cozy is “that sense of peace, that grounding, that enables adventure. There is something about getting one’s corner right that makes every other place more comfortable.” We think she’s gotten it just right.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Simple, casual, easy.
Inspiration: Vintage textiles and Georgia O’Keeffe’s style.
Favorite Element: The light. Also I love how quiet my apartment is.
Biggest Challenge: The size. I often dream about knocking down the wall to my neighbor’s apartment.
What Friends Say: That my home makes them feel cozy, safe, and supported.
Biggest Embarrassment: I always have chip crumbs everywhere, no matter how much I vacuum.
Proudest DIY: The curtain that hangs over my loft. I just stapled that right into the beams.
Biggest Indulgence: Getting in bed early and reading. I’m talking like 9pm early…
Best Advice: Ground yourself before tackling anything, especially travel and adventure. Make a space in your home that’s just for you to settle in — meditate, think, dream.
Dream Sources: I don’t really look online for inspiration, I prefer traveling.
