Two New Yorkers Upsize Into an Industrial Modern Loft in Detroit — House Tour
After spending four years in 800 square feet in New York City, Kevin and Gretchen were able to design their dream loft back in their home state of Michigan. They found a space in an old, industrial building in a mixed-use neighborhood that’s lively and vibrant. Though the loft was bare bones, it was a perfect white canvas for them to make it their own, with the help of their good friend Patrick Thompson.
“The loft is in a building that’s over a hundred years old, and we were able to design and build out the interior exactly how we wanted. We love the open common area and the mix of old and new,” says Gretchen. Gretchen works in apparel and Kevin works in film production.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Collected Modern
Inspiration: Travels, family, film, fashion, friends.
Favorite Element: Light
Biggest Challenge: Space. We moved from an 800-square-foot apartment, so expanding and adapting to a larger home took some time. We worked with Michigan designer Patrick Thompson to help us define and lay out the space.
What Friends Say: They love the large common area, gathering around the table or talking into the night around the island.
Biggest Embarrassment: Trying to keep our two ficus trees alive; we learned we have to shift them with the seasons to make sure they are getting enough light.
Proudest DIY: Floyd leg desk with table tops made out of maple from Kevin’s family farm.
Biggest Indulgence: Art
Best Advice: Grow into it, layer with time. Let your style evolve. Our space is filled with memories. Our renovation took a long time so in the period of construction our style evolved, and luckily the space allowed for some new items along with our old.
Dream Sources: Future travels, new friends
