Eat Like a Bond Villain in This Underwater Restaurant
Are you looking for a dining experience that is as austere and impressive as you are? Well, the folks at Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta are working on just the striking underwater restaurant for you. Located in southern Norway, Under will be Europe’s first underwater restaurant and the renderings are something to behold.
Snøhetta, the firm behind the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, designed the building to look like a “sunken periscope” that works with the natural surroundings, saying that the “building’s monolithic form breaks the water surface to lie against the craggy shoreline.” The three level building will feature a tide pool on the first level, a champagne bar on the second level and a restaurant on the third seabed level with a large 38 foot window that will offer stunning views of the wildlife.
“The restaurant’s color palette follows the logic of the different stories of the construction. While the champagne bar is characterized by colors inspired by the coastal zone, with its subdued colors evoking the sediment of shells, rocks and sand, the dining room is submerged in darker blue and green colors inspired by the seabed, seaweed and rough sea. The warm oak of the restaurant interior contrasts with the rough concrete shell, creating an intimate atmosphere. Materials are chosen not only for their aesthetic qualities, but also for their sustainable characteristics and ability to create a good indoor climate.”
The space will do double duty as a restaurant and research center. The exterior is purposefully covered in a rough surface so that muscles will attach to it in the hopes that “the submerged monolith will become an artificial mussel reef that functions dually to rinse the sea and naturally attract more marine life to its purified waters.” Under is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2019.
