Christmas Tree Selfies: The New Holiday Card?

Oh celebrities—always setting trends, especially when it comes to social media. Our prediction, if Insta feeds during the 2016 holiday season were any indicator, is that formal Christmas card photos are a thing of the past, because tons of stars (and literally their mothers in some cases) are all about the impromptu Christmas tree selfie.

Pro photographer Alisa Ferris said she’s definitely seen an uptick in these kinds of casual photos and that, in some cases, they’re displacing the more formal, super posey traditional Christmas card images we’re all used to seeing. Her advice? “Don’t forget the ugly sweater and moose-shaped egg nog glasses,” says Alisa. Because you might not have a 10-foot tree that’s professionally decked to the nines to stand in front of, a sense of humor goes a long way when it comes to festiveness. Let’s check out some celeb “treefies” for inspiration, shall we? (Note: We know not all of these are technically selfies, but the casual snapshot spirit is what counts here.)

Queen Bey is used to doing things big, and her treefie is no exception. The tree soars high, her neckline plunges low, and the whole thing is nothing short of amazing. So trim your tree in silver and purple (the color of royalty no less), then don your best deep V-neck and strike a pose.

Julianne Hough and husband Brooks Laich got Alisa Ferris’ memo, because they’re wearing what appears to be coordinating ugly sweaters in their tree shot. Gotta love Jules’ reindeer socks and the couple’s Santa hats, too. Note to self—a self-adhesive bow makes a Santa cap more Instaworthy, as does a good old fashioned piggyback situation.

Kourtney Kardashian posted a similar shot on her feed, but she expanded the couple concept to include her full friend squad.

And not to be outdone, mom-ager Kris Jenner, the brains behind the whole Kardashian clan (and their once infamous annual Christmas card photo shoot!), just might have given birth to the treefie too, with this totally unironic shot standing in front of her Kandyland-themed decor. Like Bey, Kris knows an all-black everything outfit is best for standing out against the tree, that is, if you’re not going full-on festive garb.

Love her or hate her, Gwyneth Paltrow knows how to create a treefie that tugs at the heartstrings. Here, the glow of her tree becomes the perfect backdrop for a tender embrace with children Apple and Moses. So treefies can be taken without full and makeup. Just hide your head in a hug with your kids.

Or opt for just shooting your kids like Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima. Just make sure they’re wearing matching outfits that coordinate with your ornaments and gift wrap.

Maybe it’s an Angel thing. Because model Alessandra Ambrosio basically did the same thing with her kids, just outdoors. Don’t be afraid to take your treefie outside. A decorated communal tree or a tree at the farm (right before you chop it down!) definitely will work for these shots, too.

HGTV star Jonathan Scott grabbed his pups and jumped in front of his tastefully trimmed monochromatic tree. So no need to go totally solo if you’re not into that. Animals are super cute treefie companions.

Celeb designer Nate Berkus boomeranged for his treefie and used a bowl of ornaments as a prop. Well done, Nate! Yes, this shot was taken on set of filming a commercial, but if that’s not even more proof of treefies being on trend, than I don’t know what is.

And this wouldn’t be a Christmas treefie roundup without including Taylor Swift, who got all kissy face with Lily Aldridge and bestie Abigail Anderson last year.

So yes, the bar for treefies has been set high, but that shouldn’t stop us regular folk from posting up in front of our own trees and getting our 2017 Christmas card on. Grab a pet, family member or friend then throw something black or festive on and snap away.
