These Empathy Cards Are For Anyone Having a Tough Year During the Holidays
Where’s the holiday card for, “I’m sorry your cat died” or “it really sucks to be sick when everyone is celebrating”? When a regular greeting card won’t do, we found some empathetic ways to say, “I’m here for you,” courtesy of Option B.
Option B is a non-profit organization started by Sheryl Sandberg that’s meant to help build resistance in the face of adversity, such as grief, discrimination, or assault. The book of the same name is co-authored by friend and Wharton psychologist Adam Grant, the title of which comes from this story:
Two weeks after losing her husband, Sheryl was preparing for a father-child activity. “I want Dave,” she cried. A friend said to her, “Option A is not available. So let’s just kick the shit out of Option B.”
If you have someone in your life trying to make the most of Option B, then we’ve got a good way for you to be a good friend, even if you don’t know what to say. The organization teamed up with illustrator Emily McDowell to design five empathy cards that say what your average Hallmark purchase doesn’t: things suck right now, but I’m here for you no matter what.
The #OptionBThere cards offer everything from a get out of holidays free card, to pointing out that small victories are totally acceptable.
