Holiday-Themed Podcasts to Get You in a Festive Mood

It’s almost time to pack your bags and head home for the holidays. Once the bustle of getting everything ready to go is over and you’re actually travelling, you enter that special zone of being “away.” You can start to relax and unwind and really get into the holiday spirit of warmth and family and togetherness.

Whether you’re driving or flying, check out these holiday podcasts for some en route entertainment that will ease you out of the hustle and get you into a festive spirit.

If you’ve never heard humorist David Sedaris read this Christmas classic essay about his stint working as an elf at Macy’s “Santaland”, you’re in for a treat. And if you listen to it every year, here’s your reminder! It first ran on the radio in 1992 but the This American Life version is a longer one. (I know, this is not technically a podcast, but it’s in the same spirit

A collection of wonderfully produced and personal Christmas stories from a selection of past guests and commentators on NPR. The episode page describes the show: “Some tales are funny; some are touching; some are insightful or irreverent or nostalgic or surprising.” Excellent writing, truly enjoyable language, and enough variety to keep the momentum going.

The Moth gives a platform for storytellers from all walks of life and their annual holiday special is always worth a listen. Homesick for the holidays, Christmas in the emergency room, New Year’s Eve as a guard at Sing Sing — stories are usually between 5 and 15 minutes and many will stick with you for a long time.
