Before and After: An Unsightly Attic Becomes a Stylish Bedroom (with a Walk-In Closet to Boot)

When interior stylist Jaimy and her husband Marcel wanted a quieter place to live, they decided to move to her hometown…where they were able to buy her childhood home. To truly make it their own, the new home needed quite a few updates. One of the most striking transformations has been the attic. The idea was to let daughter Dalí have the master bedroom, so Marcel and Jaimy could inhabit the top floor. It sure is spacious enough, but a lot work needed to be done. Like most attics, it had been used for storage without paying much attention to aesthetics. An outdated sink unit was still in place, but slowly falling apart. This floor was, to put it mildly, rather depressing.

Like most attics, it had been used for storage without paying much attention to aesthetics. An outdated sink unit was still in place, but slowly falling apart. This floor was, to put it mildly, rather depressing.

To make the room larger and brighter, the existing built-in cabinet had to be removed. Of course the old sink unit needed to go, too!

After removing the cabinet, ugly corners like the one below were revealed:

Let’s have a look at the new sink and that formerly ugly corner right next to it.

Two sinks made place for one and the piping is now hidden in the wall. A cozy alcove has emerged, where the couple stores a small book collection.

The attic has a slanted roof, so it’s a bit more tricky to create wardrobe space. This used to be the landing before entering the attic bedroom:

With a lot of help from Jaimy’s super handy dad, half of the landing was transformed into a walk-in closet, much to Jaimy’s delight:

Before we check out the rest of the finished master bedroom, let’s have one last look at the attic in its former state:

A relatively dark, disheveled and confined space has turned into this:

The roof has a window at the top and it’s great for extra light, but it’s also very high. To be able to control the amount of light, Jaimy’s dad built a special roof window contraption…

…making it easy to operate using the ropes as seen below:

Obviously, the couple is very happy with this awesome transformation. “I just love our room,” Jaimy smiles, “it feels like a luxury hotel every time I enter!”

Thank you, Jaimy!
