The New American Girl Doll Is Out Of This World
If any doll could be described as reaching for the stars, it’s this one. American Girl announced their Girl of the Year 2018 last week, and let’s just say, we love her to the moon and back.
The latest American Girl is Luciana Vega, and she’s got big dreams. Specifically, to be the first astronaut on Mars. Luciana is an 11-year-old of Chilean descent who’s on her way to space camp.
The Latina doll has a cadre of sweet accessories and fashion options, starting with her galaxy dress and holographic boots, plus her space suit, blue flight suit, and even a Mars habitat (move over, Barbie dream house).
Luciana’s story is not only cool, but a fun way to teach girls about STEM. Former NASA chief scientist Dr. Ellen Stofan—who was on the advisory board for Luciana—had this to say:
We are living in a society that is increasingly technology-focused [. . .], a society that is facing complex challenges. If we have only half the population—or slightly less than half the population—trying to figure out how to navigate this increasingly complex world we live in, we’re not going to do as well. We are not going to do as well if we’re not tapping into the talent of everybody.
Luciana’s stories also communicate a key life lesson: that it’s okay to fail. “They communicate a concept central to STEM, that failure is an opportunity for learning and improving. Luciana helps girls think about how they might face setbacks, and how they might rally to try again,” American Girl says.
