Reese Witherspoon Just Optioned This New Book of Short Stories

Reese Witherspoon is one of my favorite bookworms—follow her digital book club for inspiration—and she knows how to bring fantastic stories to the big screen. From Wild, to Big Little Lies, to the upcoming A Wrinkle in Time, I just look to Reese’s IMDb page for what I should add to my TBR pile. Her latest project (a TV show!) put a new book on my radar: Bestselling author Curtis Sittenfeld’s first short story collection, You Think It, I’ll Say It.

Variety just announced that the upcoming compendium, set to publish in April 2018, will be one of Witherspoon’s first projects for Apple under her new production company, Hello Sunshine. That’s right: she liked this collection so much, she optioned it before it was even published. It will be the first scripted comedy series for the tech platform, and they’ve landed the perfect leading lady: the hilarious SNL alum, Kristen Wiig. Wiig will also help produce the 10-episode series, and this will be her first television gig since she left NBC.

Hello Sunshine launched at the end of 2016, aiming to “elevate and champion female storytelling.” Witherspoon’s company has two other projects in the works with Apple: an adaptation of Kathleen Barber’s Are You Sleeping (another book to add to the pile!) and producing and starring in an unnamed drama with Jennifer Aniston.

“Hello Sunshine is deeply committed to creating content that will reach women where they spend time, whether it is at a movie theater, at home or on their mobile device,” Witherspoon said in a 2016 statement. “Women are looking for entertainment that speaks to them about what they value.”

If her previous projects are any indication, Witherspoon has found authors whose stories deliver on that commitment—and Sittenfeld’s literary history speaks for itself. She has authored several acclaimed novels, including Eligible (a 2016 Best Book of the Year), Prep, and American Wife. Knowing that Big Little Lies soared back to the bestseller list after the HBO series took off, you can expect that these stories will have a long waitlist… so pre-order your copy now.
