A Few Things

Hello, Friends. How are you? Was it a good week? I feel like it was pretty good at our house. I did not do anything exciting, but I was was able to sustain focus for much longer stretches of time than I usually can lately, which means I got a ton done — and that always feels good to me. Productivity is for sure one of the things that reliably makes me feel good. And the kids have off school today so that’s fun too!

How about you? Any fun plans for the weekend? I’d like to go see a movie with Ben Blair. Our friends recommended Faces Places. Have you seen it?

Speaking of movies, it seems like I hadn’t been to the movie theater in ages, but I ended up seeing three over the holiday break. Ben and I saw The Post on a date. I’m sure you’ve heard all the praise for this one and it totally lives up to the hype. Masterful storytelling and filmmaking and acting. And then the whole family went to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. I was vaguely aware it had good reviews but hadn’t paid attention, and was caught off guard by how much I enjoyed it — how much the whole family enjoyed it. Really, really, really fun. And perfect for our crew.

Lastly, my college-freshman-daughter Maude and I saw Ladybird together. We enjoyed it very much. It’s about a mother and daughter and applying to college, which mirrors our life pretty well. Interestingly, we both commented we couldn’t really see our mother-daughter relationship reflected in it. Which it turns out, didn’t matter at all. So much goodness in the movie. I wanted to hug all the characters and tell them it was going to be okay. And I found that the father’s reactions brought out the most emotion in me.

Have you seen anything good lately? Do you try to watch all the films nominated for Best Picture?

Before I forget, here are a few things I’ve been meaning to share:

The Fighter Still Remains. (Grab a tissue.)

Wonderfully specific museums.

– A transcript of Halsey’s Women’s March poem.

The Snow Queen Mother.

– How can we confront our unconscious biases?

– “Adults who suspect a predator is on the prowl and do nothing are simply monsters in another form.” NYT

– The U.S. Military’s response to the widespread practice of Afghan Commanders who keep underage boys as sex slaves. NYT

– Still freezing cold? Five snow and ice projects that will bring a little color and light to your world.

– Finally, a piece on Clinton voters instead of Trump voters. WP

– Related, John Pavlovitz’s letter to White Evangelical people.

– I finally replaced my no-longer-functioning kitchen shears with a fresh pair. I love inexpensive purchases ($8) that make a bigger than expected impact.

Drug-free zones are better packaged mandatory minimums. Or: A policy that seemed like common sense yielded perverse consequences.

– This 3D printed house in China is designed to withstand earthquakes up to 8.0 on the Richter scale.

I hope you have a wonderful winter weekend. I’ll meet you here on Monday. I miss you already.

kisses,
Gabrielle
