A Family of Five Shares a Small, Stylish 180-Square-Foot RV — House Tour
Name: Ashley Petrone, her husband and their three kids
Location: Southern California
Size: 180 square feet
Years Lived In: 9 months, owned
Last year, Ashley and her husband sold their five-bedroom house and bought 2.2 acres of land to build a dream home. Instead of renting an apartment while their home is being built, they decided to try sharing an RV! Impressively, it only took them three weeks and $2500 to finish the RV’s renovation. “I designed the RV to be functional, comfortable, beautiful, different and really to feel like a home,” shares Ashley. “I didn’t want us to feel out of place while living in there, and I have to say we really don’t.”
Their temporary home for now is a 31-foot long Cougar Keystone with a master bedroom for the parents, and three snug bunk beds for the kids.
“It was just the right amount of outdated and old, because I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it,” admits Ashley. The couple tore out the sleeper sofa, the old carpet, wallpaper, kitchen table, built-in chairs, kitchen upper cabinets and more. They painted the interior white to keep the small space feeling airy. And they added in their simple but chic decor style. The finished result is a warm, bright and cozy home on wheels that feels anything but temporary.
“We love living in the trailer. It’s definitely changed our view on home building and changed our lives.”
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: My style is eclectic and ever-changing, just like me. I would say it’s somewhere around a modern California boho farmhouse, whatever that means lol.
Inspiration: I’m inspired daily by friends on Instagram, design blogs, and by what’s happening in my life.
Biggest Challenge: Living with three kids inside of an RV. It’s been a major growth opportunity for our family. The more time we are in the RV the better it gets.
Proudest DIY: Proudest DIY would be the entire trailer. We did the entire renovation in three weeks.
Best Advice: My word these last couple of years has been grace. A gracious woman is a beautiful one.
