The Latest Instagram Trend Proves A Stunning Selfie Is At Your Nearest Craft Store

The latest Instagram trend is taking over craft stores, encouraging users to stage their portraits in the floral aisle — and it’s going viral. It’s a cheeky commentary on the “reality” of social media, and an egalitarian way to make the perfect selfie backdrop available to anyone.

As the cultural touchstone that was indie film and social media satire Ingrid Goes West shows better (and more discomforting) than anyone, much of what we see on social media — particularly on Instagram — is staged or completely fake. Not just a highlight reel of someone’s life, most shots are carefully edited (or curated, smh) in a way that creates the illusion of a perfect, unattainable reality. But no more, thanks to this utterly available, adorable, fun and parodying viral trend taking over craft stores: otherwise known as the #HobbyLobbyChallenge.

According to Mashable, Twitter user Kelsey Maggart kicked off the trend of posing with Hobby Lobby’s fake flowers as part of larger photo trend, the “Ugly Location Challenge,” last month, prompting a slew of social media users to head directly to the craft store to stage photo shoots of their own.

And we’re so here for it.

Beyond the trend, this is a great idea for anyone looking to take affordable portraits, especially for procrastinators on special occasions. (My own 2018 Christmas card may look a lot like this, because I just remembered that Michael’s and JoAnn’s Fabrics allow dogs in their stores, and we never have a complete family photo when the holidays roll around.)

Here are just a few of our favorite craft-store-staged, floral-backdrop selfies shared on Instagram this week:

Those wisteria (and that “golden hour” light) almost look real.

But seriously, you had to do a doubletake at that fern gully to see if it was real or fake, too, right?

A rose by any other name is the faux floral section at Walmart.

This Black Panther-inspired shoot between professional photographer and model-muse got me in all the warrior-woman feels.

This bump photo of a woman expecting twins is just an absolute ray of sunshine.

This screen siren-inspired, Noir-ish series is just perfection.

“Happy birthday, Samantha. Make a wish.”

Giving Idris Elba a run for his money in the smoldering department.

Last, but certainly not least, is this Jay and Silent Bob parodying the parody. Well played, sir.
