A Couple’s Cute, 400-Square-Foot Contemporary Houseboat — House Call

Name: Jaclyn Westlake, her husband Brian and their dachshund mix, Indiana Jones
Location: San Rafael, California
Size: 400 square feet
Years lived in: 4 months, owned

Tiny living with a nautical twist! Our home is a 46-foot Carver Motor Yacht with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a mid-deck, flybridge, salon (that means living room in nautical terms) and a small galley kitchen. When we moved aboard, the boat felt like a boat, so we put a lot of work into making it feel like a home, too.

We brought in real furniture, installed new carpet, updated the linens and pillows and got creative with the space we had. Many of our rooms serve several purposes and can be converted to meet our needs.

I live aboard with my husband, Brian and our little dachshund mix, Indiana Jones. Brian and I both work from home (he’s in software sales, I’m a writer) and all three of us love spending time on the water. We taught Indy how to kayak and paddleboard so he loves joining us for a sunset paddle off the aft deck.

One of my favorite things about our home is that we can move it whenever we want! We take it our for cruises around the bay a couple times a month and are planning longer trips down to Monterey and Santa Barbara this summer!

Any advice for creating a home you love? Trial and error. We went through three different bedspread options before finding the right one. If you bring something home and you don’t love it, return it! For tiny house dwellers, I’d also say to make functionality and versatility a priority. Our tables and our couch all convert in one way or another, and our bed has storage under it. These little touches make life in a small space much easier!

I’m obsessed with the mid-deck. It’s an interesting space because it serves as the entrance to the boat, Brian’s office, and our dining room. I love the vibe and versatility! It used to be an open-air deck, but the previous owner enclosed it in eisenglass, so it has a fun indoor-outdoor feel. We have beautiful views of our harbor and Mt. Tamalpais!

Thanks, Jaclyn!
