Small Space Solutions: 11 Space-Saving Nightstand Ideas

If you have a small bedroom, you may have to make compromises when it comes to furniture. No matter how tight the fit, though, one thing you need to make room for is a place for all your bedside essentials. A nightstand is something you take for granted until you don’t have one and find yourself without a place for your favorite books, a light to read by, your nightly tea, alarm, etc. Luckily, there are creative solutions out there for fitting a nightstand into your small space.

Reduce your footprint with a wall-mounted option like this one spotted on HGTV. The clamp lamp, which clips to the edge of the headboard, helps to save nightstand real estate.

Small space and on a budget? Try a chair that you can pick up at a flea market or thrift shop, like in this bedroom from Family Living featured on Emmas Design Blogg.

Maximize your wall space with a shelf either beside or above your bed for easy access, as in this room from Solebich.

I love the trick of using an IKEA Lack shelf as a nightstand—it’s minimal, elegant, and gets the job done while hardly taking up any space at all. Shehzeen from The Desi Wonder Woman took it one step further with not one shelf but two.

Combine storage and light in one with this creative project from Design*Sponge. This is a perfect way to add a night light and provide a landing spot for your phone and a few books, without taking up any floor space at all.

A skateboard nightstand, like this one from Historias de Casa, doesn’t take up much space—and it’s definitely an unexpected touch. The stool helps to anchor the nightstand and keep it from rolling away, and the art behind is a nice addition.

IKEA’s Lack Wall shelf (as seen in this photo from IKEA, via Apartment Therapy) is another excellent choice for a nightstand in a small space. It’s less than a foot wide, and it can be wall-mounted or positioned on the floor. All those shelves mean plenty of space for nighttime necessities and other storage, too.

If you prefer not to have all your stuff out in the open, a wall-mounted nightstand, like this one from Main Street Stockholm, has the same minimal look as a wall-mounted shelf, but with the option for concealed storage. (Floating your furniture is a favorite trick of ours for minimizing the impact of furniture in a small space.)

Here’s a small but sweet DIY idea from Fall for DIY. In this photo this petite table is paired with a larger one, but it could function equally well on its own.

In Joe & Brad’s Small Space With Big Style, a tiny stool takes up hardly any floor space yet accommodates all the essentials: a lamp, reading glasses, a book, and a glass of water.

This nightstand idea from IKEA, via Gurl, might be the most small space friendly one of all. A picture ledge takes up hardly any space, but it’s just right for your phone and a glass of water — really, all you need.
